How to Grow Peppers Properly

Growing peppers takes some special care, and it can be difficult to have a prosperous harvest for many reasons.  One common problem people have with peppers is that the vegetables come out too small. However, there are many things you can do to ensure that you grow proper peppers in your garden.

Growing the Best Peppers

Ensure that you plant the seeds in a spot with soil that is well-drained, with lots of sun directed to that area. If you are starting your peppers from seed, you should plant them at night, as this is better for the seeds.  If you are using seeds directly from fresh peppers, make sure that you dry the seeds well wait for them to become hard. You can do so by exposing the seeds to the conditions outside gradually. Set the seeds out for a couple of hours in the shade, preferably in a bag so birds don’t steal them.

Add some organic mulch to help retain the soil’s moisture and moderate temperature. Water your peppers once a week, with approximately an inch of water. One of the biggest problems most people have is overwatering their peppers – contrary to popular belief, peppers don’t need a lot of water.  When your plants are still small, once you begin to see the first blossoms appear, pinch them off.  A young plant is not strong or healthy enough yet to grow full-size peppers.  This helps to direct all of the energy into growing large peppers later on in the season.

Once they are at full maturity, which means they will be at their full color, use pruners to cut them down from the stem.  Don’t try to just pull them off by hand because the stems are tough, and you will do damage to the rest of the plant.

Perfect Peppers

Growing proper peppers takes work, but all that effort pays off in the end when it’s time to harvest your crop. Following the tips above will ensure success, time and time again.
